If you’re new to purchasing storage lockers, you probably thought this was a rather straight forward process, only to be surprised with how many types of lockers are on the market. So how do you decide what locker system is best for you? Identifying what you are storing, where it will be stored, and who can access this storage is a good first step.

What

The first step to finding your locker storage solution is identifying what you are storing. Do you need somewhere for staff to hang uniforms/personal belongings, or are you storing expensive company laptops? Depending on what you need to store, there are a few considerations to take when shopping for lockers. First, the style of your lockers can vary on how they are built and arranged. The standard steel corridor-style locker you grew up with in school is great for changing rooms and personal belongings due to their length and available shelving and hook options. These lockers can be placed in banks surrounding a space or arranged to create aisles. For valuables that need more secure storage, many specialized lockers exist for laptop, evidence, or weapon storage.

Where

The next thing to consider is where you intend to install your lockers. Are they going to be outdoors, or locked inside a secure room? Can they be anchored to the wall, or do you need an option for floor mounting? Do they need to be portable? Steel lockers are versatile and can be adapted for use in most applications, but many lockers are designed with a specific location in mind.

Who

The last question to ask yourself when shopping for lockers is who will have access to them. Are these lockers public use, meaning a wide variety of people will be accessing them, or do you need a high-security locking solution to keep valuables safe? Another thing to keep in mind is if you are looking for new lockers in an educational facility, chances are the lockers will go through harsher wear and tear or be vandalized than if you are purchasing secure storage for your corporate office. Paint options like anti-graffiti or durable Sandtex powder coating exist to extend the life of your lockers.

Comparing Lockers: Excalibur and Constable

It’s clear that there are several factors that impact which lockers are best for your needs, but how much does this actually impact your usability? Let’s compare two different personal storage lockers to see how big a difference the right locker can make.

Excalibur

The Excalibur locker takes your standard corridor locker and strengthens it by using 25% heavier steel for increased durability. These lockers are ideal for long-lasting school and changing room applications. Excalibur lockers feature riveted bodies and are secured with a personal padlock or combination lock. Excalibur lockers come in various sizes and single and double tier configurations to fit your spatial requirements.

Constable

The Constable locker is a specialized locker for armoury personal storage of gear and weapons. It provides higher security with a fully welded body and various locking options available. The main compartment features a universal back panel that holds specified components specific to your storage needs, while the bottom roll-out compartment is perfect for boots and heavy objects.

Both the Excalibur and Constable are excellent lockers, but they each have a specific purpose in mind. If you are storing general personal belongings in a public space for your students, a Constable locker would be overkill and inappropriate, while if you are outfitting your armoury, an Excalibur locker may not fit your security requirements or feature appropriate housing for weaponry. Knowing what, where, and who your lockers are for, and what options are on the market allow you to find the perfect locker storage system for you.
